ritual

(This project is currently being created. See below for the process thus far)

Project Type: School (solo)

Role: Designer, Artist, Videographer, Video Editing

Assignment: Make a multi-channel video installation while paying close attention to Site and Space

IDEATION

The idea I moved forward with was the idea of femininity. Specifically, around rituals that women partake in to feel feminine. The positive associations we have with those practices and also their darker tones.

I decided I wanted multiple screens of women doing mundane daily rituals on loops, where something unexpected would happen for the few moments in the middle. A reversal of the routine.

SKEMATICS

Originally, I thought I would show the loops on old televisions facing each other, but far apart. As if they are were a community, but each were isolated as well.

FILMING PROCESS

Above: Mixing fake blood for filming.

This project has already been incredibly interesting for me as a creator. Asking people to be vulnerable on film is not an easy task. Even something as simple as brushing one's hair, is still usually a private moment. Asking them to burn it (using a wig of course), is asking a lot more.

I thought about performing all the tasks myself and having the film be uniform in that way, but I think it is more compelling to see different women of differing shapes and shades. This way, it will be more obvious that these women are women as a whole. Ideally making the piece current and relatable.

Stills from one of the video loops.
